Question 1

What are the must-see sites in the French Alps?

Accepted Answer

Chamonix and the Mont Blanc massif, Lake Annecy (the cleanest in Europe), the Verdon Gorge, and [the Écrins National Park](https://www.ecrins-parcnational.fr/) are the standout attractions. Grenoble, the Alpine capital with its museums, [Aix-les-Bains](https://www.aixlesbains-rivieradesalpes.com/) and its thermal spas, and the Savoyard villages (Mégevette, Samoëns) complete the picture.

Question 2

Can you swim in Alpine lakes from a campsite?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Alpine lakes are among France's most beautiful for swimming: Annecy, Bourget, Aiguebelette, and Serre-Ponçon offer cool (18-22°C in summer) but crystal-clear water. Lake Annecy is regularly ranked among the cleanest lakes in Europe.

Question 3

Is the Mer de Glace glacier worth visiting from Chamonix?

Accepted Answer

The Mer de Glace - France's largest glacier (7 km long, 200 m thick) - is reached from Chamonix by [the Montenvers mountain railway](https://www.compagniedumontblanc.fr/fr/) (1,900 m altitude, departing every 20 minutes in summer). An ice cave is carved into the glacier each year. The views over the Grandes Jorasses and the Aiguille du Dru are breathtaking. Allow half a day from any campsite in the Chamonix valley.

Question 4

What is the history of Chamonix and mountaineering?

Accepted Answer

Chamonix is the birthplace of world mountaineering: the first ascent of Mont Blanc by Balmat and Paccard took place here in 1786. The town hosted the first Winter Olympics in 1924. [The Alpine Museum](https://musee-alpin-chamonix.fr/) traces three centuries of mountain history, from summit conquests to the birth of winter sports.

Question 5

What is the cultural heritage of Savoie?

Accepted Answer

Savoie was an independent duchy only joined to France in 1860 - its Franco-Piedmontese heritage is evident in the architecture, cuisine (fondue, tartiflette, raclette), and local dialects. The region's castles (Chambéry, Chillon on the Swiss side) reflect this distinctive history.

Question 6

Which museum lets you relive the history of the Winter Olympics in the Alps?

Accepted Answer

[The Winter Olympics Museum in Albertville](https://www.halleolympique.com/activites-halleolympique_albertville/tremplin-92/), housed in the Olympic Hall, traces the XVI Winter Games of 1992, held across the French Alps (Méribel, Les Arcs, La Plagne, Courchevel, Val d'Isère, Tignes…). Medals, equipment, the Olympic flame, and video archives bring the event to life. Located 45 minutes from Chambéry and Annecy, it makes an ideal stop from any Savoie campsite.

Question 7

What hikes can you do in the Alps from a campsite in summer?

Accepted Answer

[The Tour du Mont Blanc](https://www.autourdumontblanc.com/) (170 km, 10 days) is a classic long-distance route. Accessible day walks include the Lac Blanc from Chamonix, the Arly gorges, Lac de Peyre in Isère, and the Laffrey lakes. The GR 5 crosses the Alps from Lake Geneva to Nice.

Question 8

What summer mountain sports can you do from an Alpine campsite?

Accepted Answer

Paragliding (Annecy is one of the world's top destinations), canyoning (Verdon Gorge, Ardèche), mountain biking, and via ferrata are all well-developed. Operators offer introductory sessions from most tourist valleys.

Question 9

Can you swim in Alpine lakes from a campsite in summer?

Accepted Answer

Yes - this is one of the great pleasures of the Alps in July and August. Lac d'Annecy, rated among the purest in Europe, reaches 22-24°C at the height of summer; its supervised beaches at Doussard, Talloires, and Albigny are accessible from valley campsites. Lac d'Aiguebelette (Savoie), closed to motorboats, is the warmest in the Alps (up to 26°C). Lac de Serre-Ponçon (Hautes-Alpes) offers turquoise sandy beaches at 900 m altitude. Watersports bases on each lake offer canoe, paddle board, and sailing hire.

Question 10

When is the best time to visit the Alps in a mobile home?

Accepted Answer

June to mid-September is the ideal window: open passes, accessible lakes, mild temperatures (18-25°C). July-August is peak season - Annecy and Chamonix campsites book up early. June and September are less crowded, ideal for hiking in peace. By train, Grenoble is 3 hours from Paris, Annecy 3h30, and Chambéry 3 hours; the Mont-Blanc Express connects Saint-Gervais to Chamonix, and Altibus coaches extend coverage to the valleys - making car-free mountain travel very feasible.

Question 11

Are the Alps a good alternative to the coast for escaping the summer heat?

Accepted Answer

Yes, that's one of their great summer assets. Altitudes of 600-2,000 m (depending on the campsite) keep temperatures pleasant (18-25°C) when coastal areas are sweltering. Alpine lakes also offer swimming in crystal-clear water.

Question 12

What precautions should you take to hike safely in the Alps?

Accepted Answer

Check the mountain weather forecast daily (météo-montagne.fr): storms, fog, and sudden temperature drops are possible even in summer above 2,000 m. Set off early in the morning - most afternoon thunderstorms in the Alps develop from around 2pm. Carry suitable equipment (waterproof jacket, warm layer, headtorch, map). In a mountain emergency, call the PGHM (mountain rescue gendarmerie) via 112. CAF mountain huts offer overnight stays and hot meals for multi-day itineraries.
