Question 1

What are the must-see sites on the French Riviera?

Accepted Answer

Nice's old town and the Promenade des Anglais, Cannes' old port, the art galleries of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, and the Cap d'Antibes are iconic stops. [The Lérins Islands](https://www.cannes.com/fr/index/les-iles-de-lerins.html), a 15-minute boat ride from Cannes, offer a wild escape from the Riviera bustle.

Question 2

Is it better to stay in the Var or Alpes-Maritimes for a Riviera campsite?

Accepted Answer

The Var (Hyères, Saint-Raphaël, Fréjus) offers more affordable, family-friendly campsites with beautiful beaches. The Alpes-Maritimes (Cannes, Antibes, Nice) are pricier but closer to the lively Riviera scene. For budget-conscious travellers, the Var is usually the smarter choice.

Question 3

Is Monaco worth a day trip from a Riviera campsite?

Accepted Answer

Unquestionably. The principality of Monaco, nestled within the Alpes-Maritimes, can be visited in a day from any campsite in the department. The Rock - the Prince's Palace, cathedral, and Napoleonic Museum - the Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit (May), [the Monte-Carlo casino](https://www.montecarlosbm.com/fr/casino-monaco/casino-monte-carlo), and above all [the Oceanographic Museum](https://musee.oceano.org/) (founded by Prince Albert I, one of Europe's finest aquariums) make it an unforgettable excursion.

Question 4

Which museums are worth visiting from a mobile home on the Riviera?

Accepted Answer

Nice alone has exceptional museums: [the Matisse Museum](https://www.musee-matisse-nice.org/) (Cimiez hill), [the National Marc Chagall Museum](https://musees-nationaux-alpesmaritimes.fr/chagall/), and [the MAMAC](https://www.mamac-nice.org/) (Modern and Contemporary Art). [The Maeght Foundation](https://www.fondation-maeght.com/) in Saint-Paul-de-Vence and [the Picasso Museum](https://www.antibes-juanlespins.com/musee-picasso) in Antibes complete a remarkable art trail.

Question 5

What is the history of the Nice Carnival?

Accepted Answer

[The Nice Carnival](https://www.nicecarnaval.com/) is one of the oldest and largest in the world - it dates back to the 13th century and draws over a million visitors each February. The flower battles and giant floats along the Promenade des Anglais make it a spectacular event.

Question 6

Was Fréjus really a major Roman city, and what can you see there?

Accepted Answer

Fréjus (Forum Julii) was founded by Julius Caesar in 49 BC and became one of the Mediterranean's largest Roman military ports - a rival to Arles and Nîmes. Its remains are remarkably well preserved: a Roman amphitheatre (still used for concerts), aqueduct, Roman gate, theatre, and a 5th-century Early Christian baptistery. [The Municipal Archaeological Museum](https://www.ville-frejus.fr/archeologie-et-patrimoine/musees-et-monuments/musee-archeologique/) brings together finds from the site and conveys the scale of the ancient city.

Question 7

Can you swim all season on the French Riviera?

Accepted Answer

The Mediterranean is ideal for swimming from June to September, with water temperatures between 22°C and 26°C at peak season. In May and October, the water is cooler (17-20°C) but days are sunny and the coast far less crowded.

Question 8

What water activities can you do on the French Riviera?

Accepted Answer

Scuba diving in the Estérel calanques and around the Lérins Islands, paddleboarding, sailing, and jet-skiing are all popular. Hyères is a world-class kitesurfing destination thanks to the regular mistral wind - the Almanarre beach is famous among kitesurfers.

Question 9

Can you hike in the hinterland from a French Riviera campsite?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Estérel massif (between Saint-Raphaël and Cannes) offers spectacular coastal hikes above red porphyry rocks plunging into the blue sea - reachable in a day from campsites in Fréjus or Mandelieu. Further east, [the Mercantour National Park](https://mercantour-parcnational.fr/fr) is 1.5 hours from Nice: Lac d'Allos (2,228 m), the Vallée des Merveilles (Bronze Age rock carvings), and the perched villages of the Alpes-Maritimes make for a surprisingly alpine hinterland just behind the Mediterranean.

Question 10

When is the best time to visit the French Riviera in a mobile home?

Accepted Answer

May-June and September offer the best value: warm sea, guaranteed sunshine, and fewer crowds. July-August is beautiful but expensive and very busy - book several months ahead. The Riviera stays pleasant into October with often mild weather.

Question 11

How do you get around the Riviera from a campsite?

Accepted Answer

The coastal train line (Nice-Vintimille) runs along the Mediterranean and serves Antibes, Cannes, Juan-les-Pins, and Monaco - the most practical way to avoid summer traffic. Regional [Zou!](https://zou.maregionsud.fr/) buses complement the network for reaching inland villages.

Question 12

Is the French Riviera very expensive for a mobile home holiday?

Accepted Answer

In July–August, yes: expect €80–180/night for a mobile home in a Côte d'Azur campsite. A few strategies help: choose May–June or September (30–50% cheaper, sea still warm), prefer Var campsites (Fréjus, Roquebrune, La Croix-Valmer) over those close to Cannes or Nice, and look for sites slightly inland (5–10 km from the coast) which offer similar facilities at significantly lower prices.
